Sustainability at LuxSE

In 2022, for the first time, we unveiled a new structure for our sustainability strategy, built around our three sustainability objectives for the period leading up to 2024 – climate transition, education and gender equality.

These three goals are the cornerstones of our sustainability strategy, built on our vision, mission and corporate values. Each of these objectives incorporates initiatives that are linked to our four core pillars – think BUSINESS, think PEOPLE, think PLANET, think COMUNITY.

While the structure of our sustainability strategy has changed, we continue to be committed to providing a transparent and comprehensive account of the progress made towards our strategy by highlighting sustainability-related activities, and the impact created through different initiatives in our annual Sustainability Reports.

Julie Becker, Chief Executive Officer of LuxSE
A word from our CEO
"LuxSE’s commitment to sustainability is rooted in our values. Strategy and business operations want all our teams to work together to bring about positive change, act in a responsible way and contribute to addressing issues that affect all our stakeholders – our people, our clients and industry, our communities and our planet. Although we have made good progress and strengthened our sustainability agenda, the past years have highlighted the need to accelerate the transition to a low-carbon and more inclusive economy, which requires a lot of will and effort across our industry and beyond. At LuxSE, we want to be part of the solution."

Playing a pivotal role in accelerating the net-zero transition
Climate transition
Tackling climate change and stopping rising global temperatures from reaching 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels has become a global priority. Finance is at the heart of the solution to address this challenge, as trillions of dollars need to be mobilised and channelled into concrete solutions that have the potential to make a significant and measurable impact. Home to Luxembourg Green Exchange (LGX), the world’s first and leading platform dedicated exclusively to sustainable finance, we are uniquely positioned to influence capital markets and are working towards net-zero emissions within our own operations and in our broader market. At LuxSE, we are committed to play our part and are now working towards reducing our own carbon emissions and becoming a net-zero business by 2050 at the latest. To encourage transparency and accountability in the market, we will disclose on our data and progress annually as part of our climate transition plan.

Bridging the knowledge gap and building capacity for more sustainable capital markets
Education
As the world’s leading exchange for the listing of debt instruments, leader in sustainability and key player of the Luxembourg financial system, we act as a sustainable finance ambassador bringing visibility to issuers of sustainable instruments, bridging knowledge gaps and providing access to data with the aim of creating meaningful change in capital markets. Securing a low-carbon and inclusive economy begins with putting concrete sustainable finance education in place. With that in mind, in 2020 we launched the LGX Academy, with the aim of broadening the overall market understanding of the foundations of sustainable finance, promoting inclusive investment products and helping direct future capital flows towards sustainable investment projects.

Ensuring fairness, inclusion and respect
Gender equality
At LuxSE, we are convinced that advancing gender equality leads to better talent pools, higher productivity, more business and improved social and economic outcomes. While significant progress has been made over the last decades, there is still a long way to go before we reach global gender equality. As a central player in the environments and markets in which we operate, LuxSE is well-placed to take action to promote and advance gender equality. Improving gender balance within our company, contributing to gender equality more broadly and working towards the achievement of SDG 5 – "Achieve Gender Equality and Empower all Women and Girls" – are all critical to one of our three sustainability objectives: Gender equality.
Sustainability Reports
Our annual sustainability reports highlight the progress that we've made each year when it comes to our CSR strategy, related activities and the impacts created through different CSR initiatives.

Helping LuxSE-listed companies integrate CSR
In 2017, we revised our X Principles of Corporate Governance to include a 9th principle specifically dedicated to the CSR strategies of the companies concerned. Within Principle 9, we require LuxSE-listed companies to define a CSR policy, set out the measures taken to implement this policy and publish updates accordingly.
