Celebrating 10 years of LGX: A decade of innovation, growth and impact

In September 2026, we celebrate a significant milestone: the 10th anniversary of the Luxembourg Green Exchange (LGX).

We launched LGX with a bold ambition: to increase visibility and transparency in the rapidly emerging sustainable finance market and help connect capital with sustainable projects around the world.

What began in 2016 as the world's first platform dedicated exclusively to green bonds has since evolved into the leading sustainable finance platform, connecting issuers, investors and market participants around a common objective: financing a more sustainable future.

Over the past decade, sustainable finance has transformed from a niche segment of the financial industry to a core component of global capital markets. The adoption of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the Paris Agreement in 2015 put sustainability firmly on the global agenda, raising awareness of the urgent need to mobilise capital to address climate change and broader sustainability challenges. Finance had to become part of the solution.

At LuxSE, we believed that for sustainable finance to scale, markets needed greater transparency, credibility and trust. Issuers needed a way to showcase their commitments, while investors needed confidence that the financial instruments they supported were genuinely contributing to sustainable outcomes. LGX was created to help bridge that gap – and to help make finance sustainable by default.

Growing alongside the market

As sustainable finance evolved, so did LGX.

The platform quickly expanded beyond green bonds to encompass social, sustainability and sustainability-linked bonds, as well as sustainable investment funds, as the sustainable finance market continued to diversify.

Over time, we also recognised that building a platform was only part of the answer. Sustainable finance needed not only visibility, but also knowledge, data and market expertise.

This belief led to the launch of the LGX Academy and the LGX DataHub in 2020. The Academy was created to build sustainable finance knowledge through training and capacity building programmes around the world, while the DataHub was designed to improve access to structured, reliable sustainable bond data and support more informed investment decisions.

That same year, LGX received the UN Global Climate Action Award in the category "Financing for Climate-Friendly Investment", recognising its contribution to advancing sustainable finance globally.

Innovation has remained at the heart of the LGX journey. More recently, we expanded our offering through initiatives such as the EU Taxonomy Issuers Window and the Transition Finance Gateway, reflecting a more holistic approach to sustainable finance and the growing importance of understanding companies’ broader transition strategies. Launched in 2025, the EU Taxonomy Issuers Window highlights LuxSE issuers with significant turnover or CapEx alignment with the EU Taxonomy, while the Transition Finance Gateway brings together transition data on non-financial corporate issuers to provide greater transparency around their climate transition efforts.

And we continue to evolve with the market.

A decade of measurable impact

The growth of LGX over the past ten years reflects the significant development of sustainable finance itself.

In 2021, LGX surpassed 1,000 sustainable securities. In 2024, sustainable bonds displayed on LGX exceeded EUR 1 trillion outstanding, marking an important milestone in the scale and maturity of the market.

And the momentum has continued. In 2025, around 600 new sustainable bonds were added to LGX, making it the second-best year in the platform’s history for the number of sustainable bonds added in a single year.

Today, LGX displays more than 3,400 sustainable securities, including over 2,500 bonds, from more than 340 issuers across 60 countries. Since launch, securities displayed on LGX have raised more than EUR 1.7 trillion for sustainable development projects around the world.

Beyond the platform itself, the LGX ecosystem has continued to expand.

The LGX Academy has trained more than 1,000 participants in around 50 countries, contributing to the development of sustainable finance knowledge where it is needed most. Meanwhile, the LGX DataHub has grown from its initial coverage of around 800 sustainable bonds to providing reliable data on more than 26,000 sustainable bonds worldwide.

The impact of LGX cannot be measured in numbers alone.

It also lies in the transparency we have helped promote, the trust we have helped build and the community we have brought together. Over the past decade, we have worked with issuers, investors, policymakers, development institutions and other market professionals around the world who share a common ambition: to use finance as a force for positive change.

Looking ahead

Anniversaries are not only about looking back, but also about looking ahead. While significant progress has been made over the past ten years, the need for sustainable finance has never been more urgent. We are already feeling the impacts of climate change, while the transition to a more sustainable economy requires investment on an unprecedented scale.

At the same time, the market is entering a new phase. The focus is shifting beyond specific green projects towards the transition of companies and entire economies, with credible transition plans becoming increasingly important.

For LGX, this means continuing to evolve alongside the market – supporting transparency, market integrity and innovation, while helping connect capital with the investments needed to finance the transition.

The first decade of LGX was about helping build the sustainable finance market. The next will be about helping it evolve and scale to support the transition of the wider economy.
